Embracing The Seasons Of Life

Embracing The Seasons Of Life

As Summer is nearing its end, and Fall is on the horizon, I have been giving the seasons some thought; both in terms of making plans and decorating my planners, and in terms of my life. I am a 60-year-old retired public school teacher. I am a sober widow, with a 21-year-old son, and a lovely significant other. This is absolutely, positively, and without a doubt, not where I thought I would be at this stage of my life journey. I don’t know exactly where I thought I’d be, but I do know this isn’t it. I surely didn’t see myself as a widow, or as someone who would need to be in recovery. However, I also know absolutely, positively, and without a doubt, this is exactly where I am supposed to be.

According to the traditional interpretation of the seasons of our lives, I am now in the Winter of mine. Age-wise, this is true. I am far closer to the end of my time on this earth than I am to the time of my start here. I have found, however, each of my life seasons have had their own seasons within them. No matter what age I’ve been, I have experienced joy and sorrow, happiness and sadness, contentment and restlessness, beginnings and endings, hope and despair, feelings of uselessness and usefulness, and more.

My age season does not define what I experience in my day to day living. Sure, I have more aches and pains than I used to. I have more wrinkles, and gravity is certainly doing its job. (Seriously, when did my boobs start being under my armpits?) I am more aware that I won’t live forever than I have ever been, but I don’t really give it much thought. I don’t have a bucket list. That just seems so exhausting to me; trying to cram in certain things before my body leaves this earth.  I continue to thrive. I continue to experience all human emotions. I continue to question and seek answers.

Fall has always been my favorite season of the year. This is the season of life that is associated with nearing the end. Not for me. The Fall season of my life looked just like every other season of my life, just different in its unique happenings. I neither feared nor looked forward to it. It simply happened, and I simply lived it.
As for the Fall season of the year, I do not associate it with nearing the end, either. I will do my best to embrace and enjoy the signatures of the season: cooler days and chilly evenings, that cozy feeling of lamps coming on in homes earlier in the day, sweaters, leggings and Uggs, crunching leaves, the smell of wood-burning, and pumpkin spice candles (Ok, I have already started using mine and it is not even September yet.) I will also, however, do my best to embrace the things that come with every season, both of the year and our lives: the joy and sorrow, the happiness and sadness, the contentment and restlessness, the beginnings and the endings, the hope and despair, and the feelings of uselessness and usefulness that are likely to occur. I have found these things, my friends, are the things that make up life-no matter what season we are in, either literally or figuratively.

Although I truly do “Love Fall Most of All” there is something to be said for every season of the year, just as there is something to be said, and to live through, for every season of life. I have found no season of my life to be better, or worse, than another. I have found none to be more, or less, rewarding. I have found none to be singular, as all my seasons have included the defining marks every other season. I have found that things are exactly the way they are supposed to be.

Do you have a favorite season of the year? Have you found the seasons of your life, thus far, to include all the things I have found them to include? Has your experience been similar, or different, from mine?
